For Your Smoothies
In this chapter, I discuss a number of other ingredients that you may want to use for your smoothies to add great flavor and many nutritional benefits. These include aloe vera juice, coconut water, coconut meat and oil, carob powder and cocoa powder (chocolate). Let’s look at the wonderful benefits of each one of these special ingredients.
Aloe vera juice. Did you know that aloe vera juice has great health benefits for your skin, digestion and female health?
Aloe vera juice can enhance your natural beauty with its ability to soothe, heal and moisturize skin. Aloe vera is helpful in treating many skin conditions including acne, eczema, rashes, dermatitis, psoriasis, sunburns and wound healing. It is also used to treat some side-effects of radiation treatment. Chemicals contained in aloe vera appear to improve circulation to the skin and even kill bacteria.
It is also cooling and calming to the body. Aloe vera helps to relieve inflammatory conditions as well as digestive complaints including food allergies, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and malabsorption syndrome. Aloe vera also helps to relieve menopause related hot flashes. It is very beneficial to drink a little of this juice during the hot summer days when the temperatures can get very high.
I recommend drinking 2 ounces of aloe vera juice per day, either mixed with water or juice or blended in a delicious smoothie with lots of fresh fruit. Aloe vera juice might lower blood sugar levels so if you are diabetic, you should monitor your blood sugar levels more closely.
Coconut water. This is the clear liquid inside young, green coconuts. Coconut water has many benefits since it is fat free and has a naturally sweet, nutty flavor. It also contains essential vitamins and minerals, particularly its high content of potassium, as much as 670 mg per 11 ounce serving! In contrast, coconut water contains only 5.45 mg of sodium per ounce. This makes it a very beneficial drink in terms of its health benefits.
Potassium is an essential mineral and helps to regulate the water balance inside our cells as well as nerve conduction. It is necessary for the health of our heart, kidneys, bones and other organs. If your potassium level is low, you are more likely to suffer from high blood
